Blair Castle
Blair Castle stands white-walled and turreted against a backdrop of Highland hills, the ancient seat of Clan Murray and one of Scotland's most historically significant castles. For over 700 years, the Dukes and Earls of Atholl have called this home, and today it remains a living aristocratic estate—complete with the Atholl Highlanders, Europe's only legal private army, who still parade in full ceremonial dress.
The castle's 30 rooms open to visitors tell a story that spans the medieval to the Victorian, from the vaulted Great Hall to the elegant Georgian apartments. Treasures include arms and armour, Jacobite relics, and portraits spanning centuries. Mary Queen of Scots stayed here; Bonnie Prince Charlie used it as his headquarters; Queen Victoria visited and was so charmed she granted the Duke the right to maintain his private army.
Beyond the castle, the grounds reward exploration. The Hercules Garden, restored to its 18th-century glory, contains a nine-acre walled garden with fruit trees, vegetables, and ornamental plantings. Diana's Grove holds some of the tallest trees in Britain, while the wider estate offers walks through ancient woodland and deer parks. Blair Castle delivers everything a Scottish castle should: history, grandeur, beautiful surroundings, and stories that bring the past vividly to life.
