Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of Scotland's most photographed landmarks, a magnificent 21-arch concrete railway bridge that curves gracefully across the head of Loch Shiel. Built between 1897 and 1901, this engineering marvel was part of the West Highland Line extension to Mallaig, and it remains a working railway bridge to this day.

The viaduct gained worldwide fame through its appearances in the Harry Potter films, where it features as part of the route to Hogwarts School. Watching the Jacobite steam train cross the viaduct has become a bucket-list experience for visitors from across the globe. The sight of steam billowing from the locomotive as it traverses the curved bridge against the backdrop of Highland mountains is truly magical.

The viewpoint near the Glenfinnan Visitor Centre offers spectacular vantage points to photograph the viaduct. The area itself is steeped in history - the nearby Glenfinnan Monument marks the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745, beginning the Jacobite Rising. This combination of natural beauty, engineering achievement, and historical significance makes Glenfinnan an essential stop on any Highland tour.
