Armadale Castle & Gardens
Armadale Castle and Gardens occupies a magnificent setting on the Sleat peninsula, known as the 'Garden of Skye' for its unusually lush and sheltered landscape. For over two centuries, this was the seat of Clan Donald, the most powerful of all Highland clans and Lords of the Isles who once ruled a maritime kingdom stretching from the Hebrides to the coast of Ireland.
Today, the romantic ruins of the 19th-century castle stand amid 40 acres of historic gardens and ancient woodland. Specimen trees tower over winding paths that reveal sudden sea views across the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of Knoydart. The gardens showcase a remarkable collection of plants from around the world, thriving in Sleat's mild, Gulf Stream-warmed climate.
The Museum of the Isles tells the sweeping story of Clan Donald and the Lords of the Isles, from their Norse-Gaelic origins through their centuries of power to the aftermath of Culloden and the Highland Clearances. It's a fascinating journey through Highland history, set against a backdrop of extraordinary natural beauty.
