Sandwood Bay
Sandwood Bay is often described as Britain's most beautiful beach, and reaching it feels like discovering a secret world. This mile-long crescent of pinkish sand, backed by rolling dunes and towering cliffs, lies on Scotland's remote northwest coast, accessible only by a four-mile walk through wild moorland. The journey itself is part of the magic, building anticipation until the beach finally reveals itself in all its untouched splendour.
The beach is dominated by Am Buachaille, a dramatic 65-metre sea stack that rises from the waves at the southern end of the bay. According to local legend, the area is haunted by the ghost of a shipwrecked sailor, adding to the sense of otherworldly isolation. The Atlantic rollers that crash onto the shore have travelled thousands of miles uninterrupted, creating a powerful, elemental atmosphere.
Owned by the John Muir Trust, Sandwood Bay remains wonderfully unspoilt, with no facilities or development of any kind. This is a place to experience Scotland at its wildest and most pristine. The ever-changing light, the roar of the sea, and the complete absence of human intrusion make Sandwood Bay an unforgettable destination for those willing to make the journey.
