North Coast 500
The North Coast 500 has been called Scotland's answer to Route 66, a spectacular 516-mile circuit of the northern Highlands that showcases some of Europe's most dramatic coastal scenery. Starting and ending in Inverness, the route loops around the top of Scotland, passing through landscapes that range from gentle farmland to wild moorland, soaring mountains to pristine white-sand beaches.
The route links a remarkable collection of attractions: ancient castles perched on clifftops, prehistoric monuments, world-class whisky distilleries, and wildlife-rich coastlines. Along the way, tiny villages offer warm Highland hospitality, local seafood, and accommodation ranging from wild camping to luxury hotels. The single-track roads themselves become part of the adventure, demanding patience and rewarding with views around every bend.
While it's possible to drive the NC500 in a few days, doing so misses the point entirely. The joy is in taking time to explore: walking to a hidden beach, watching eagles soar above a mountain pass, pausing to photograph a sunset over the Atlantic. Most travellers recommend at least a week, though many wish they'd allowed longer. This is a journey through Scotland's wild heart, best savoured slowly.
