Falls of Shin

The Falls of Shin offer one of Scotland's most thrilling wildlife spectacles: Atlantic salmon leaping through crashing white water on their epic journey upstream to spawn. The falls themselves are a series of rocky cascades on the River Shin in Sutherland, creating a natural obstacle that salmon must overcome through extraordinary feats of strength and determination.

Watching salmon leap can be mesmerising. The fish launch themselves from the churning pool below, twisting and turning through the spray as they attempt to clear the falls. Many fail and are swept back down, only to try again and again. When conditions are right, dozens of salmon can be seen making the attempt, their silver bodies flashing in the sunlight. It's a powerful reminder of nature's resilience.

The site includes excellent viewing platforms directly above the falls, making it one of the most accessible places in Scotland to witness this natural phenomenon. Woodland walks wind through the surrounding forest, rich in red squirrels, pine martens, and diverse birdlife. The visitor facilities have recently been redeveloped, and the falls are free to visit at any time, though the salmon are only present seasonally.

What You Can Experience

Best Time to Visit

Late summer and autumn (July to October) are the best months for salmon watching, with peak activity often in August and September depending on river levels. The falls need sufficient water for salmon to attempt the leap - too low and they wait, too high and the falls become impassable. After rain often provides the best action.
