Inverness Castle
Inverness Castle dominates the Highland capital from its commanding position above the River Ness. The striking red sandstone building we see today dates from the 1830s, though a fortress has stood on this strategic site for centuries. After serving as a courthouse and administrative centre, the castle is now being transformed into an exciting new visitor attraction that will celebrate Highland heritage.
The site has witnessed pivotal moments in Scottish history. It was here that Macbeth is said to have murdered King Duncan (though Shakespeare took considerable liberties with the facts). Mary Queen of Scots was refused entry in 1562, leading her to order the execution of the governor. The castle was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, most recently after the Jacobite occupation of 1746.
The castle terrace already offers spectacular views across Inverness, the river, and the surrounding hills. The new Spirit of the Highlands attraction will feature immersive experiences telling the story of the Highlands and its people. Even before the full development opens, the castle and its grounds provide a wonderful introduction to the Highland capital and an excellent viewpoint over this historic city.
