Glen Affric
Glen Affric is frequently described as Scotland's most beautiful glen, and it's hard to argue with the assessment. This breathtaking valley west of Loch Ness contains one of the largest and finest remnants of ancient Caledonian pine forest, the wild woodland that once covered much of Scotland. The combination of native pinewoods, sparkling lochs, and dramatic mountain backdrops creates scenery of extraordinary beauty.
The glen is a haven for wildlife, including red squirrels, pine martens, Scottish crossbills, and golden eagles. The native pines, some centuries old, have a character quite different from commercial plantations - gnarled, twisted, and full of personality. Walking through this forest feels like stepping back in time to a Scotland that has largely disappeared elsewhere.
Forestry and Land Scotland and Trees for Life are working to expand and restore the native forest, and the results are already visible. The glen offers walks for all abilities, from gentle lochside strolls to challenging mountain ascents. The view from the Dog Falls viewpoint is particularly famous. Whether you have an hour or a whole day, Glen Affric delivers scenery that will stay with you forever.
