Loch Ness

Dores Beach

Dores Beach is where serious monster hunters come to scan the waters of Loch Ness. This peaceful pebbly shore at the loch's northern end offers uninterrupted views down the full 23-mile length of the loch, making it the perfect spot for contemplating the mysteries that might lurk in the dark depths below. The late Steve Feltham famously set up his monster-watching station here, dedicated to the search for over 30 years.

The small village of Dores sits just back from the shore, with the welcoming Dores Inn providing refreshments with loch views. The beach itself is a mix of pebbles and coarse sand, perfect for skimming stones across the famously dark water. On calm days, the loch can be mirror-still, reflecting the surrounding hills; on others, waves crash onto the shore with surprising force.

Dores offers a more peaceful alternative to the busier tourist spots further down the loch. It's a wonderful place to simply sit and absorb the atmosphere, watching the light change over the water and the hills. The beach is also a starting point for walks along the loch shore and into the surrounding woodland. Whether or not you spot Nessie, Dores Beach provides a memorable and contemplative Loch Ness experience.
